Digimon: Darkness Returns

Chapter Three

Akai Fujita entered his house alone. He had just gotten back from soccer practice, and
both parents were still at work. He walked to his room, soccer ball under one arm. He
had a lot of messy brown hair that stuck out at every angle and was wearing gray pants, a
black hoodie, and goggles. He always wore goggles because so did his favorite characters
from the show Digimon. People would have made fun of him for it if he wasn’t such a great
athlete.

He stole a cookie from the cookie jar at the top of the refrigerator and walked to his room.
He stopped dead in his tracks at the doorway.

Sitting on his bed was a very large red-and-orange striped egg. Next to it sat what was
presumably a blue digivice. Akai ran, jumped onto his bed, and grabbed them. "I can’t believe
it! Digimon! Real Digimon!"

He immediately started pressing buttons. A screen popped up showing many red glowing dots,
some stationary, some moving. He watched, fascinated.

Akai jumped when a voice came from his window. "Didn’t your mother teach you not to play
with stuff that isn’t yours?"

He whirled around. In his window was a blue ball with wings and claws. Akai recognized it
immediately as the evil Digimon DemiDevimon. "What do you mean?"

DemiDevimon sighed, "I mean, kid, that ain’t yours. Give it to me; I’ll take care of it."

Akai frowned. "If it’s not mine, whose is it then?"

DemiDevimon hopped from one foot to the either impatiently. "Does it really matter? It’s not
yours."

Akai wasn’t sure to trust him. After all he was evil. "Sorry, no."

"Alright then, kiddo," the Digimon began, puffing himself up, "I’ll have to take it by
force. Evil Whisper!"

Just then the digivice started beeping. The egg cracked and light shone. "Digivolve to Veemon!"

Standing now on the floor between DemiDevimon’s attack and Akai was a Digimon. It was about
three feet high, blue, with a vee on its head. Akai gasped. Veemon was his favorite from the
show. Veemon took the attack in Akai’s place. He gathered his strength and attacked.
"Vee Head butt!"

He sent DemiDevimon flying out the window. "I’ll get you for this!" the evil Digimon
hollered as he fell.

Suddenly Veemon reverted back to his baby form, Chibumon. "Hi Akai. I’m your Digimon."

Akai collapsed to the floor.

Yuki sat watching her Digimon. It was staring right back. It was small, round, and blue,
with black button eyes and little fins on either side of it. She had just fed it every candy bar
she had in her room, and it didn’t seem to be full yet. It was just like her. She had a feeling
feeding the two of them would not be easy.

Her digivice had called it Mareemon. More like Eat-you-out-of-house-and-home-mon. Yuki
was about to go grab food from her brother when her mom knocked on the door. "Sakura would
like to have you come over. She said you could stay for dinner. She wants to introduce you to
someone. I’m fine with it. She also wants Jonni to come. What do you think?"

"Sure," said Yuki, wondering why in the world Jonni was invited. They rarely hang out with
him at Yuki’s place, let alone Sakura’s. And who did she want her to meet?

Yuki stuffed Mareemon in her backpack, hooked her powder blue digivice to her belt, and
went to fetch Jonni.

She opened the door to his room and peeked inside. Jonni wasn’t there, but someone else was.
A green caterpillar like creature sat on his bed reading a comic book. "Oh, hello. Are you
Jonni’s sister?"

She nodded numbly. It scuttled across the room. "The name is Wormmon, nice to meet you.
Yuki, I believe? Although Jonni often refers to you as the ‘Annoying One’. Do you go by
that as well?"

She shook her head. "Not usually. Are you his Digimon?"

"Yes," Wormmon nodded, "I’m here to protect Jonni."

"Do you know where he is?" She gently picked Wormmon up.

"I believe he’s at the computer, why?"

"We get to go to a friend’s house. You could come too."

Wormmon brightened. "Really? I love meeting people."

Yuki smiled. "I bet."

She put him in her backpack too, next to Mareemon, and went to the computer. Jonni was
completely focused on the screen and was paying no attention whatsoever to anything else.
She bent close to his ear, and said, “Yo, Jon, your Digimon Wormmon want to paint the town red.
Are you coming?"

Jonni jumped. "Wormmon?"

Yuki grinned. "Secrets out, surprise, I know. The Digimon and I are heading
to Sakura’s place, you got an invite. Might as well come; you can meet our Digimon."

"Your what?" he yelped.

"Chill, I’ll explain when we get there."

He frowned. "Okay."

Yuki knocked on the Kano family door. Jonni was still grumbling. She had told him the
whole story on the way. He wasn’t happy, to put it mildly.

Sakura opened the door, "Hi guys, join the party."

Inside were a boy Yuki faintly recognized, Sakura’s brother, and Sakura’s baby sitting charge,
Hana. "Who’s that?" asked Yuki, eyeing the boy.

"That’s Hiromi. He’s from my history class."

Yuki raised an eyebrow. "Are you dating?"

Sakura rolled her eyes, remembering her parents’ reactions. "Next person who mentions
something like that is asking to be barbequed."

"Oookay," said Yuki, pulling off her backpack. "Is this an invitation only party, or are
Digimon allowed?"

"Actually," Sakura said seriously, "Digimon are mandatory."

Sitting on the table were two Digimon and two Digi-eggs. Wormmon crawled over to the table
and struggled his way up. Inside Yuki’s backpack Mareemon made squeaky kitten noises. She
was taken out and placed next to a white one that it began to squeak with, as though they
were talking. "That’s YukimiBotamon,"said Sakura proudly, "I thinks she’s going to evolve again.
She’s mine."

Sakura introduced everyone and their Digimon. The two six-year olds held their
Digi-eggs reverently, squealing every time the eggs moved on their own and wondered what
they would become. They snacked and swapped stories on how they received their Digimon.
Jonni explained the hacked file, Yuki and Sakura took turns explaining their part, Kaji
and Hana just found theirs waiting in their rooms, but the one that surprised all was Hiromi’s
tale.

"My father works for the government," he began quietly. "He likely made the page you hacked,
Jonni. He specializes in electronic intelligence. He’s the head of this program, called
Ragnarok. Ragnarok has infiltrated the Digimon World. I found out that government agents are
making Digimon their slaves and invading the Digital World. They kill Digimon mercilessly to
make their Partners stronger, while treating them very cruelly. So I stole Rokomon to save him
and spite my father. Rokomon was one of their special projects. They were making him very
powerful, to be a slave to one of their top agents. I just couldn’t let it happen. It wasn’t
right. You don’t know how cruel and inhumane most of those agents are. Even the best ones are
cold."

Everyone sat in silence. It was amazing to hear such a thing.

The silence was shattered by a roar. They rushed to the window. A scream ripped through
the air.
